Musical overview
There are two string orchestras, and every participant is assigned a chamber group with daily coaching. There is also a Tutti orchestra which provides an opportunity for the whole group to play together. Tutti orchestra is a very different experience to conventional orchestral playing as the music is learnt by ear. Furthermore, all participants compose their own sections of music which we then combine to make one big – usually quite crazy – piece that everyone plays together.
Here at Magdalen Farm Strings we aim to nurture the whole musician, which is why we include a choir and a Dalcroze Eurythmics session every morning. Singing is invaluable for general musicianship and has proven positive effects on mental and emotional wellbeing. Dalcroze Eurythmics is an approach to learning music through movement. It aims to enhance musicianship, improve co-ordination and concentration, and develop the skills needed to be a good performer such as confidence, communication, expression, and creativity.
Additionally, we have evening activities with visiting musicians from different backgrounds and genres. In the past these have included folk and jazz workshops, composition, songwriting and African drumming.
